On Zoom
Are you stuck on which PRONOUNS to use in Yiddish? Do you use neopronouns in English or another language and want to figure out how they would TRANSLATE into a Yiddish context?
Are you figuring out or experimenting with your GENDER and you feel that Yiddish would be a really gender-affirming and identity-affirming place to explore your gender alongside your connection to YIDDISH?
Maybe you’re a GRAMMAR nerd and you want to learn about the ways that trans and queer Yiddishists have created Yiddish-sounding pronouns that are native to the Yiddish language? Maybe you’re just CURIOUS?
FORMAT
We’ll start with a grammar crash course to learn what pronouns are and how we use them in Yiddish, plus lots of examples of how nonbinary pronouns are currently used grammatically in Yiddish.
Then, there will be time to work in small groups or alone to write out ideas you have for your own Yiddish neopronouns and start to try them out!
To end, depending on the number of participants, there will hopefully be time for everyone who wants to ‘workshop’ your Yiddish pronouns to present your Yiddish neopronoun ideas or questions to the group and receive the group’s support – this can be support for brainstorming ideas, getting feedback on the pronouns you came up with, asking the group to try out your pronouns so you can see how they land for you, etc.! Feedback is entirely optional.
*This workshop is open to everyone. We prioritize making space for trans, nonbinary, and gender-queer folks. Please note that this is not a space for cis folks to ask questions and learn about trans identities and experiences (there are resources on the internet for that), but cis folks are welcome to learn about the grammar of (neo)pronouns in this workshop.
ACCESSIBILITY
The workshop will be presented in English, with Yiddish words presented in transliteration. CART captioning and ASL interpretation will be available. Let us know if you have any accessibility needs you’d like to address
